Population and Random Samples

A population is a large set of items that have something in common.

Population generally refers to patients but the term can also be used to denote collections of inanimate objects, such as sets of autopsy reports, hospital charges, or birth certificates.

A sample is a subset of the population, selected so as to be representative of the larger population.
